Terna: public consultation on new Milan-Montalto di Castro direct current electrical connection kicks off

From 21 January to 6 February, Terna presents the new electrical line project to administrations and citizens; the intervention - part of the future Hypergrid network - will increase the transport capacity between several market areas and improve the stability and flexibility of the National Electricity Grid; the project will involve five regions - Lazio, Tuscany, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy

Project Development

Terna, the company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia that manages the Italian Electricity Grid, has kicked off the public consultation phase concerning the new direct current Milano-Montalto di Castro connection. The initiative includes a set of information meetings addressed to the local communities and institutions involved.

The new 500 km “Milano - Montalto” electric line will optimize energy transit between Central North Italy, by ensuring a more effective transport to meet the growing energy demand of northern regions. The project provides for the construction of new submarine cables between Montalto di Castro (Viterbo) and Avenza (Massa-Carrara) in the first stage, followed by an underground section obtained by modernizing and reconverting the existing direct current overhead lines between Tuscany, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy.

The works will be carried out with the HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology to better integrate the renewable capacity expected in the coming years. This solution ensures a most stable, robust and sustainable network, and reduces the land occupied to a minimum.

The future Hypergrid network - of which the “Milano - Montalto” is an essential part of - will increase the efficiency of the Italian electricity system, whilst minimizing its environmental impact. It is a massive modernization project concerning existing overhead lines along the Italian Tyrrhenian and Adriatic backbones and toward the islands, which will be flanked by new submarine connections up to 525 kV. The interventions mapped out will be synergistic with the development works already under way, to enhance existing 380 and 220 kV, including those set to be decommissioned. This approach will significantly improve the network’s transport capacity and flexibility and will support the energy transition and the integration of renewable sources.

The first general meeting will be held on 21 January in digital mode and will concern all territories affected in the five regions crossed by the new infrastructure: Lazio, Tuscany, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy.

Then from 22 January to 6 February, it will be followed by eight “Terna Incontra” online meetings specific to the 36 municipalities involved. During these meetings, Terna experts will be available to elaborate on the project’s characteristics, focusing especially on technical, environmental and implementation aspects, and promoting the citizens’ participation.

Terna invites all citizens and local administrations to take part in the informative meetings, to know more about the works. Further info on the project and on the complete event calendar can be found at:https://www.terna.it/en/projects/public-engagement/milano-montalto.
