Finnish Stainless Steel Manufacturer Announces Investment in CCU

Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technology can utilise a company’s emissions as raw materials to produce new products such as e-fuels. This approach was employed by Finnish stainless steel manufacturer, Outokumpu, through their partnership with Q Power, a Power-to-X Finnish technology provider specialising in synthetic fuels.

Outokumpu and Q Power signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the production of synthetic methane through the capture and utilisation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from the company’s production processes. One of the key targets of this study is to establish an in-depth understanding of the ecosystem needed for synthetic methane production from technical, financial, and commercial aspects. The project will be implemented at Outokumpu’s largest site in Tornio, Finland, and aims to produce e-fuels to reduce reliance on fossil sources.

Outokumpu is among the largest producers of stainless steel in Europe and the Americas. They produce and develop sustainable stainless steel in their mills and research centres across Finland, Germany, Mexico, Sweden and the US.
